Dungog's Spencer Turrin and his Aussie Men's Fours teammates have set the pace in qualifying for the men's four Olympic final.
Turrin and his teammates Alex Hill, Alex Purnell and Jack Hargreaves led from the start to win their heat in a time of 5:54.27, three second ahead of the United States which also qualified directly for the final on Wednesday at 11.10am.
The Australian team, which collected silver in the past three Olympics, will be hoping to overcome the Great Britain team which has won gold at the past five Olympic.
Great Britain won their heat in a time of 5:55.36, 2.3 seconds ahead of Italy who will also qualify directly for the final.
Turrin made the switch to the men's fours at Tokyo after finishing sixth in the pairs final at Rio in 2016.
Turrin's teammates Purnell and Hargreaves are Olympic debutants while Hill scored a silver medal in the men's fours at the last Games in 2016.
It has been a successful move to the fours with the team crowned world rowing champions in 2018.
Australia also won it's heat of the women's fours in a time of 6:28.76, just 0.23 second ahead of Ireland who also qualified directly for Wednesday's final.
The schedule of the rowing events has been brought forward because of a forecast typhoon on Monday.
Australia also progressed to the men's and women's pairs semi-finals on Tuesday with both teams winning their respective heats.
Meanwhile, Cessnock shooter Daniel Repacholi begins his 10m men's air pistol campaign with the heats from 2pm today.
