If there was a preseason favorite to be the first quarterback selected in the 2022 NFL draft, it was Oklahoma’s Spencer Rattler.
He may still end up taking that title come next April, but his performance in Saturday’s season opener against Tulane proved just how much development he still needs before he can be a consistent passer at the next level.
The Sooners barely escaped with a 40-35 win over the unranked Green Wave, despite being the No. 2 team in the country and playing at home. The game was originally supposed to take place in Tulane’s neck of the woods (New Orleans), but Hurricane Ida had other plans.
Rattler threw a cringe-worthy interception on the Sooners’ second play of the game, one of two picks on the day for the Heisman Trophy candidate. He would finish the game with just over 300 yards and a touchdown through the air, completing 30 of his 39 passes, showing plenty of the flashes that will have NFL scouts intrigued.
It’s only one game, but Rattler still has plenty to work on if he wants to be the QB1 in the 2022 draft class.
