A disappointing 2021 campaign continued for Oklahoma quarterback Spencer Rattler, who was benched just before halftime of Saturday’s iconic “Red River Showdown” rivalry game against Texas.
Rattler completed just eight of his 15 passes for 111 yards and no touchdowns, but had two costly turnovers that helped the Longhorns build a huge lead heading into the locker room.
After an ugly interception and a lost fumble, Rattler nearly threw another critical interception in the red zone, as he passed up an easy completion for a first down for a throw that was tipped and nearly picked.
Freshman backup Caleb Williams replaced Rattler, and promptly led the Sooners to an impressive second-half comeback, tying the game in the fourth quarter after trailing by as many as 21 points.
Heading into this season, Rattler was widely considered the top quarterback prospect in a fairly weak 2022 NFL draft class, but his play so far this year has his draft stock plummeting. At this point, the bigger question isn’t whether or not Rattler will be among the top quarterbacks selected in next year’s draft, but whether or not he’ll even get his starting job back at any point this season.
