Speedwell residents living near fire 'evacuated' from homes as blaze rages on

Residents have been evacuated from their homes after a huge fire broke out in a Speedwell tower block.

At least 70 firefighters from Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire are currently battling the flames at the Strachan and Henshaw Building, based on Foundry Lane.

Bristol Live has been told by residents that police have told those living in the homes close to the blaze that they have to leave their properties and take shelter in a nearby chuch.

Residents living close to the blaze say they can hear lots of explosions and see fireballs shooting up.

There are also reports the fire is gaining in force.

A witness, who wished not to be named, said: "There has been a few miles of cordon and the people that have been evacuated are being housed at Croft’s end church.

"They’re saying that the blaze will be going until the early hours of the morning."

Bristol Live is still waiting to hear back from the fire service about the evacuation.

Earlier Group manager for Avon Fire and Rescue Steve Quinton said ten appliances were tackling the flames.

"We urge motorists to avoid the area," said Mr Quinton. "People should keep their windows and doors closed.

"We still don't know if there are any hazardous materials inside. So far we have only found normal workshop materials."

The fire first broke out around 6.45pm, today (May 3).
