Speedwell fire cordon in place 'for some time' as police thank residents for their patience

Police have renewed their appeal to hear from anyone in the Speedwell area on Friday night as investigations into the cause of a huge fire are stepped up.

Officers reduced the size of the cordon around the Foundry Lane site today, and thanked local residents for their patience.

But detectives warned that it could be ‘some time’ before the emergency service response operation is over, because they can’t physically access the building to even begin the long process of working out how the blaze started.

The blaze, on Friday evening, was one of the biggest tackled in Bristol in recent years, and homes around the area were evacuated for a couple of nights.

“We appreciate the impact this incident has had on local residents and businesses and we’re grateful for the understanding and patience they’ve shown so far,” said Det Insp Roger Doxsey, from Avon and Somerset police.

“We’re working hard to understand what happened but due to the fact the building is unsafe, this may take some time.

“I appreciate the cordons in place are disruptive but they are there in the interests of public safety,” he added.

“We have managed to reduce the size of the cordon around the scene today but some road closures still remain in place.

“We continue to appeal to for anyone who was in the area on Friday evening who may have seen something suspicious, or anyone who thinks they may have information which could help us, to get in touch,” he said.
