Speedway will continue in Armadale despite permission being granted for houses

It will be business as usual for speedway racing in Armadale this summer.

The 2020 season will open in late March after planning permission was granted to redevelop the 80-year-old stadium.

West Lothian Council has granted  permission in principal to Billy Cochrane to build 80 homes on the site in Bathgate Road in the town.

Monarchs co-promoter John Campbell said: “This application has rumbled on for a long period now. The application was originally submitted back in June 2016 and it is just a week short of two years since the local councillor Stuart Borrowman announced on Facebook that the council was minded to grant permission.

“We’ve been kept fully up to date by the stadium owners of their plans and we see the stadium being available to us for the foreseeable future.”

Mr Cochrane said: “We needed to protect our interest in the stadium site and that is why we submitted the planning application.

“Now that the application has been granted I have spoken to the speedway club and confirmed that we are a million per cent behind the continuation of speedway at Armadale Stadium.”

A spokesman for the speedway club added: “The 2020 speedway season fixture list is currently being prepared and dates should be announced shortly for what will be a busy and exciting season at Armadale Stadium featuring Edinburgh Monarchs and Armadale Devils..”

The stadium opened in 1939 but was last used for greyhound racing in 2016.

Edinburgh Monarchs have been tenants  at Armadale since 1997.
