Speedo Mick gives crucial charity walk update as he thanks people of Liverpool

Speedo Mick is set to start pounding the pavements again – after injury last week forced him to call a temporary halt to his 1,000-mile charity walk.

The fantastic fundraiser, aka Mick Cullen, who is walking from John O’Groats to Land’s End, told the ECHO: “I’m planning to restart the walk at about 9am on Saturday – from the Birches Brow Hotel, on Formby Lane, Aughton.

"Then it will be the 13 miles into Liverpool, ending up at the Hilton Hotel again, where I was looked after so well last weekend.”

The 55-year-old from Dovecot paid tribute to all the people – here in Liverpool, across the country and across the world – who have been getting behind him, and his bid to raise £100,000 for the charity he is setting up.

Leave The Light On will run community projects for people, young and old, who feel isolated – and, at the time of writing, Mick had already raised more than £93,000.

He said: “The response I have had has been absolutely unbelievable and I want to thank everyone so much. I’ve had the kind of attention that is normally reserved for stars – I’m just Speedo Mick, but I’ve had just as much attention.

“The people of Liverpool have been great, and I’ve also been lucky enough to have support from people across the country – and from people in Canada, Australia and all over the gaff.

“Everyone is watching Speedo at the moment – they’re switching off Coronation Street!”

True Blue Mick has undergone extensive treatment at Everton’s Finch Farm training ground for his calf injury, and was also bowled over by the support he received from Liverpool FC around the time of the recent Merseyside derby.

He added: “The backing I’ve had from so many people and organisat-ions has been incredible. This week, I’ve been at Liverpool Cryotherapy (a cryosauna used for whole body cryotherapy sessions, at -140°C), sitting in a pod in Float Planet, in Liverpool, and meditating at Kadampa Meditation Centre, in Sefton Park – I’ve just been trying to chill out.

“I’ve also been using Tiger balm, having massages and I’ve now got a compression sock on my right foot – that will not be coming off!”

Despite his enforced break, Mick is still aiming to finish his walk on Saturday, February 8.

He said: “It might sound ambitious, but I’m an ambitious fella!”
