People can't believe hit and run killer's 'joke' sentence

Tributes have poured in for a 15-year-old boy who was killed by a hit and run driver.

Leo Meek knocked Jack Jones off his bike while driving a Volkswagen Tiguan on Manor Drive at around 9.40pm on April 26 this year.

Meek, 22, left Jack with fatal head and neck injuries while speeding at between 53 and 55mph on a 30mph residential road.

Meek went home to bed without reporting the accident to the authorities.

He later admitted failing to stop at the scene of the collision and causing death by dangerous driving. He was jailed for 40 months during a hearing at Liverpool Crown court yesterday.

ECHO readers paid tribute to Jack and offered sympathy to his family after we reported on the sentencing.

Cathy Rutherford said: "How heartbreaking. That poor young lad, my heart breaks for his family, I have a son the same age and can only imagine how they must feel."

Emma Goulding said: "Heartbreaking. RIP young fella condolences to the family."

Grace Fitzpatrick said: "Rest in peace sweetheart."

Peter Hussey, prosecuting, said Jack was riding a yellow and white Carrera bicycle on Manor Drive while at the same time a private hire car was driving southward.

The private hire driver passed Jack on the opposite side of the road moments before he was struck by the Volkswagen which was "driven at speed by the defendant".

During a hearing at Liverpool Crown court yesterday Judge Menary jailed Meek for 40 months, which has been seen as too lenient by many ECHO readers.

Beth Williams said: "It should be life as he took an innocent child's life."

Lynn Mills said: "Absolutely appalling. Our justice system is a laughing stock. I really feel for the child's family. Hit and run and he gets off lightly."

Delroy Naif said: "Regardless of his guilty plea 40 months is a joke, he was doing 50mph in a 30mph and he fled the scene."

Tracy Mckenna said: "Take a life should serve a life sentence and whole life not out early for good behaviour."

During yesterday's hearing Judge Menary found the case to fall "somewhere towards the bottom" of level two in the sentencing guidelines, the starting point for which is five years with a range of between four and seven years.

Judge Menary said a pre-sentence report described Meek as "somewhat immature" and noted he was a "relatively new driver with limited experience".

Meek was jailed for three years and four months, which was reduced from five years to reflect his guilty plea.

He was disqualified from driving for three years from the date of his release.

Bernice Campbell, defending, said it was a "truly awful, sad case".

In a letter to the judge, Meek wrote he accepted "full responsibility" and said there was "no excuse" for the harm he had caused.

He told the judge he "panicked" and said he was a newly qualified driver.
