Speeding driver's tyres had less tread than a Formula 1 racing car... that's pretty bald

A speeding driver's tyres had less tread than an F1 car.

Traffic officers spotted the vehicle driving at high speed down Bury Road in Radcliffe, Bury, in the early hours of Tuesday.

Officers pulled the driver of the Seat Leon over before making the discovery.

In a tweet posted to the GMP Traffic account, officers said the driver was issued with an immediate prohibition notice.

The car is likely to be immobilised.

Traffic officers also reported the driver for using a vehicle in a dangerous condition.

A number of Twitter users responded to the post in shock.

One said: "That's totally ridiculous and an accident waiting to happen. Good stop all round."

Another tweeted: "How can people let their tyres get like this? I change them when I've got about 2.5mm left on them as I don't like to compromise the safety of my car and others around me. Shocking."

Driver hit with prohibition order after tyres found to have less tread than F1 car (GMP)

In the UK, the law requires car tyres to have a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm in a continuous band around the central three quarters of the tyre.

Formula 1 cars have tyres with a much smaller tread, with some 'slicks' having no tread at all.

Slick tyres have more area of contact with the surface providing more grip, but are not suitable for all weather conditions.
