A woman is facing serious charges after being allegedly caught speeding north-west of Melbourne.

Police said they "were almost lost for words" when they recorded the 42-year-old's sedan reaching 251 kilometres per hour in a 110 kph zone on the Calder Freeway at Woodend around 12:30am on Easter Sunday.

The officers stopped the vehicle at Kyneton, about 15km away, and allege the Hallam woman was also using her mobile phone.

Police said the woman was expected to be charged on summons with offences including conduct endangering life, driving at a dangerous speed and using a mobile phone while driving.

They said her car was impounded.

Police urge drivers to be cautious

Victoria Police is running a special, state-wide road operation during the Easter holiday period, which will continue until Anzac Day.

Road policing Superintendent John Fitzpatrick called on people to be patient, travel at the speed limit and "have a bit of respect".

"A small percentage of people continue to flout the law and just do what they want to do," he said.

Three lives were lost on Victorian roads over the weekend and more than 90,000 breath tests were conducted.

Superintendent Fitzpatrick said police would review the results from the road operation and consider introducing added measures, such as double demerit points and extra fines.
