Speeding could be virtually impossible from 2022 under tough safety rules

Road safety campaigners have welcomed the introduction of safety rules which will make speeding virtually impossible.

From 2022, new cars will be unable to break the speed limit as mandatory technology will see vehicles monitor road signs and cap your top speed accordingly.

The UK has vowed to adopt these new EU rules despite Brexit, according to the Daily Record .

Experts say the changes could save 1,300 lives every year.

The Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) limiters are part of a package of increased safety regulations branded “the biggest leap forward since the seat belt” agreed by the EU.

They also include requirements for Automated Emergency Braking, which can detect pedestrians and cyclists, and Lane Keeping Assistance to stop drivers drifting.

Lorries will have anti-drowsiness alarms fitted to wake drivers who fall asleep behind the wheel.

The rule changes will come into force in the UK because British regulator the Vehicle Certification Agency has said it will still mirror the EU rules in order to make it easier for car producers.

The rules have been agreed by negotiations between the European Council, made up of the 28 member governments, the European Parliament and the European Commission.

Joshua Harris, director of campaigns for Brake, welcomed the news, saying: “These lifesaving measures come at a vital time, with road safety in a concerning period of stagnation with more than 70 people still being killed or seriously injured on British roads every day.”
