Speed restrictions on trains from Glasgow Central today amid heavy rain warning

Speed restrictions have been imposed on Glasgow trains following warnings of heavy rainfall across the country.

Network Rail will be imposed a 40mph speed limit for some trains between leaving the city on Monday.

From 10am, trains between Howwood and Kilwinning will be affected as a result of the high volume of rainfall forecast.

There will be a different timetable on the Glasgow Central to Ayr route with services running every 30 minutes.

Trains from Glasgow Central to Largs/Ardrossan will run normally but will be subject to the speed restrictions.

Services from Glasgow Queen Street to Oban/Fort William/Mallaig will also be affected.

The speed limit is expected to be in place until at least 9am on Tuesday morning.

The Met Office has put a yellow weather warning in place from 3am on Monday morning to 9am on Tuesday morning.

A statement from Network Rail explains: "Our team has reviewed the weather, in particular, the heavy rain due later tonight through until Tuesday morning. In response, we'll implement speed restrictions at some specific locations in the west & southwest of Scotland's Railway. Almost all services will run as planned.

"Specific locations on the West Coast Main Line, Glasgow Central - Ayr, West Highland and Kyle Lines are affected.

"We've been working closely with train operators over the past few days. Our team are checking pumps and known flood sites to make sure we're prepared."
