Speed limits on Dublin motorways could be reduced under Green Party proposal

Speed limits on Dublin motorways could be reduced under a proposal by the Green Party aimed at reducing carbon emissions.

The proposal, which would see limits reduced from 120km/h to 110km/h on the country's motorways, had been raised during negotiations on the Programme for Government.

It was ultimately not included in the programme but a commitment was made to review speed limits.

While the move would lengthen travel times, the Greens claim it would improve fuel consumption for those driving near top speed, reports the Business Post.

The proposal is one of a number of proposals put forward by the party aimed at reducing carbon emissions.

Cork Green Councillor Dan Boyle said: "We need to get people thinking about the level of speed we use on our roads.

"There are road safety concerns, of course, but the faster we go the more we use our fuel and fuel itself creates carbon emissions.

"As a country, we have continuing problems with carbon emissions so as part of a package of measures to reducing carbon emissions across the country, how fast we go and how often we travel and how are issues we need to address."
