Speed limit on entry to Kirkcudbright cut from 60mph to 40mph

The speed limit on a busy road into Kirkcudbright has been cut from 60 to 40mph.

The new restriction applies to southbound traffic on the A711.

It runs from the Arden House Hotel on Tongland Road to the 30mph sign into town.

Councillor Dougie Campbell brokered the move in response to local safety concerns.

The change was agreed after consultation with council officials and police.

Mr Campbell said: “It’s a long straight stretch of road into town. Drivers bombing down the road would hit the 30 and take 200 metres before they reduced their speed.

“The new 40mph limit will therefore act as a buffer to slow the traffic before the 30mph limit.”

He added: “Feedback so far has been has been positive in terms of the effect it has had.”

Laurence Bristow-Smith, who owns self-catering accommodation The Rookery on Tongland Road, said: “I think this is a good thing.

“People came down that road hell for leather. Recently I was doing the bottom of our drive with a mate. The windrush from the traffic flying past was bloody frightening.”

He added: “You could argue the council doesn’t get many things right but this is one of them.

“It a very positive move – but they should have made it 40 all the way from Tongland Bridge.”

Another resident Bill Craig added: “The road into Kirkcudbright from Tongland Bridge was both dangerous and unpleasant to walk with a significant number of speed related bad driving incidents. It seemed like an accident waiting to happen.

“The introduction of the 40mph limit has definitely reduced the traffic speed and improved safety.

“We are grateful for the support given by Dougie Campbell to navigate through the council’s processes and make this happen.”
