Speed limit on busy commuter routes into Bristol to be reduced following safety concerns

Speed limits are to be reduced busy commuter routes between North Somerset and Bristol.

North Somerset Council is to change the limits on the A369 through Easton-in-Gordano and Abbots Leigh.

The changes will see the current 50mph limit on the A369 Pill Road reduced to a 40mph limit from by Happerton Farm to Vowles Bottom.

The 30mph limit from Vowles Bottom through Abbots Leigh will remain at 30mph before it reverts back into a 40mph.

The 30mph limit on the A369 through Leigh Woods will also remain.

Changes will also be made to the limits on the busy Weston Road.

The speed limit will be reduced from 60mph to 50mph along the stretch of Weston Road from its junction with Clevedon Road at Failand to its junction with the A369.

Changes are also being planned for a busy rat run in Wraxall.

Belmont Hill, often used as a route between Bristol Road and Clevedon Road, will see its speed limit reduced from 60mph to 50mph.

All of the routes are heavily used – particulary the A369 – as a commuter route into Bristol.

Thousands of people each day travel out of Portishead and along the route, with congestion and gridlock a regular occurrence at peak times.

The speed limits are being introduced following concerns from local parish councils in the area about the speed and volume of traffic using the busy routes.

A 50mph speed restriction will be temporarily enforced (PA)

A traffic order to allow the changes has already been done.

It is hoped the changes will be in place by the end of the year.

North Somerset Council spokeswoman Zoe Briffitt said:  “We are waiting for our contractor to carry out the works to change the signage.

“The traffic order has been completed."
