Speed limit on A1058 Coast Road in North Tyneside set to go back up

The speed limit on a busy Tyneside road is set to go back up this weekend.

The A1058 Coast Road, which runs between North Tyneside and Newcastle, has had a 30mph limit since work started on the new triple-decker roundabout at Silverlink in 2016.

When the junction improvements, led by Highways England, finished at the end of March, the 30mph limit on the A19 was lifted.

However, the lower speed restriction remained on the Coast Road as North Tyneside Council began work on improving a cycle route in the area.

The authority said it was necessary to keep the 30mph limit on the eastbound carriageway for the safety of the workforce while the project was under way.

The scheme is expected to finish by this Friday and the low speed restriction is to be lifted after that.

A council spokesman said: "With regards to the eastern carriageway, we're expecting, weather-permitting, to complete our work around August 9. So the 30mph limit would be lifted then."

Meanwhile, Highways England has already removed the 30mph limit on the westbound carriageway.

This means, from this weekend, drivers will be able to travel along that stretch at 50mph in both directions.

And new 50mph speed limit signs will be put up in the area to highlight the changes.

The council says the new shared pedestrian and cycle path will create a sustainable link between the North Tyneside coast and Newcastle.

Phil Scott, head of environment, housing and leisure, added: "The Coast Road Cycle Scheme will provide a safe, direct and convenient pedestrian and cycle route between our beautiful coast and Newcastle.

"As a council we are committed to improving sustainable access throughout the borough to make walking and cycling an attractive choice for all.

"This scheme moves us closer to achieving our aim of providing a continuous network of strategic cycle routes."
