Speed camera vans are a common sight for many Irish motorists, with cameras now in operation on 1,322 stretches of road around the country.
All of the speed camera vans are located on roads where there has been a speed-related collision involving an injury or fatality.
According to Gardai, speed cameras are on Irish roads to save lives and protect road users.

Enforcement of the cameras is carried out by the GoSafe operator using vans marked with high-visibility reflective material and displaying a safety camera symbol.
It provides a minimum of 7,400 enforcement hours per month..
How do speed cameras work and how are people caught speeding?
Speed cameras are always located in the back of the van, so if a motorist can see the speed camera van, then they are in range to be tracked for their speed.
A motorist driving towards or away from the back of the van can also have their speed monitored.

There is always a person inside the speed camera van whenever the GoSafe vans are out on a stretch of road. GoSafe runs 24/7, for all 365 days of the year including bank holidays.
When are speed checks more likely?
Generally, there are more speed checks at weekends than on weekdays and more speed checks between midnight and 03.00 than at other times.
What are the new average speed cameras?
A new average speed camera system came into affect on the M7 at the end of April. The new cameras are located the M7 in Tipperary between Junction 26 and Junction 27 and are now in operation on both sides of the motorway, both eastbound and westbound.
A fixed speed camera captures a vehicle’s speed at a fixed point on the road, whereas an average speed camera systems track a vehicle’s speed over a set distance. If a vehicle is detected above the posted motorway speed limit 120km/h speed limit the driver will be in violation and enforcement penalties will apply.
Motorists detected driving in excess of the 120km/h motorway speed limit are liable to prosecution.
Drivers caught speeding will be fined €80 and will also receive three penalty points.
