Speed camera goes live on dangerous Paisley road

Drivers have been warned a new speed camera at a Paisley accident black spot is now live.

The £30,000 safety device has been installed in Renfrew Road after it was revealed the stretch had seen six serious accidents in just three years.

It’s hoped the move will reduce the number of casualties and change driver behaviour on the 30mph road, after a review found a shocking 58 per cent of motorists break the speed limit.

Alan Thomson, manager of the West Safety Camera Unit, said: “Excess speed has been a factor in many of the recent collisions on Renfrew Road , which means they were avoidable.

“Any driver who speeds needs to realise that they are breaking the law and putting their own and other lives at risk.

“Installing a safety camera on Renfrew Road aims to reduce the number of casualties on this section of road by encouraging improved levels of speed limit compliance.”

Councillors and residents raised concerns about the road after several significant crashes and called on Police Scotland to take action.

In March, a 78-year-old woman was injured on a bus on the road when she was thrown from her seat.

A driver and his passenger had to be cut from wreckage of another two-car collision in April last year.

The road was closed for several hours as police probed the incident.
