'Speechless' — Cardiff City fans react as Mick McCarthy edges closer to hot-seat

Some Cardiff City fans have reacted with fury at the prospect of Mick McCarthy taking over as the successor to Neil Harris.

Harris was dismissed on Thursday afternoon following a 1-0 defeat at the hands of QPR in midweek, a result which condemned the Bluebirds to their sixth consecutive defeat in all competitions.

A number of names emerged as possible contenders, with Paul Cook and Tony Pulis among the early favourites with the bookies.

The likes of Craig Bellamy and former Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe were touted by fans as favoured appointments, but it now seems Cardiff will call on McCarthy in a bid to get their fading play-off bid back on track.

City are currently 15th in the Championship table, 13 points away from the top six, and McCarthy faces a tough job in making up the ground needed to mount a challenge.

The former Republic of Ireland boss has a decent record in the Championship and has led successful promotion bids before, but comes into this job having just been sacked by Cypriot side APOEL, where he lasted just eight games.

Nevertheless, his pedigree at this level may well have proved enough to convince the City board he is the right man to turn things around.

Cardiff fans, however, will clearly need to be won over, with many reacting to the news with vocal disappointment.

Taking to social media, one fan described the move as "a step backwards", while another fan declared it to be a "truly horrendous appointment".

Our own fan columnist Scott Johnson even said he was "speechless" at the news, and Twitter user 'Ninian Opinion' likened the appointment to "a bit of tape over a crack".

However, not everyone is seemingly so against the move.

It's understood the length of deal set to be offered to the Yorkshireman is yet to be decided, and some fans believe it could make sense as an interim appointment until the end of the season.

McCarthy has pulled out of talkSPORT punditry duties this weekend and reports say he could be confirmed as Cardiff boss on Friday afternoon.
