MPs told to prepare for election 'fight'

Scott Morrison has urged his coalition colleagues to use the upcoming Christmas period to recharge ahead of an election "fight" next year.

As federal MPs gear up their election strategies, speculation continues to mount on when the prime minister will call next year's poll.

Despite declining opinion polls, Mr Morrison said the government was on track to record a fourth term in office.

"We will have a fight that we will win next year, so we need you to take your time and reconnect and recharge over Christmas," Mr Morrison told MPs.

"Election results change the course of nations."

It's expected the next federal election will be held in May, based on the way the government has crafted the parliamentary sitting program for 2022.

The program revealed the budget, normally held in May, will be brought forward to March 29.

The prime minister used a similar strategy ahead of the 2019 election, where the federal budget was held early and the election was called a week later.

While May is shaping up as the most likely time for the election, Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese said an earlier date was possible.

He told a Labor caucus meeting the election could be called just after Australia Day, due to a regular parliamentary sitting session not being scheduled for the week after the public holiday.

Mr Albanese said there was a 50-50 chance of parliament not sitting at all before the election, after rising for the year on Thursday.

Labor will hold its first campaign rally ahead of the election on Sunday, with the opposition leader indicating Labor was in the box seat.

"The government is fracturing to the right and to the left - this is a government that has run its course," Mr Albanese told the caucus meeting.

"The government does not deserve a second decade in politics."

Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce also used his address to the coalition joint party room to urge MPs not to take anything for granted in the lead up to the election.

"There is no such thing as a safe seat," Mr Joyce said.

Greens leader Adam Bandt said there was a possibility the minor party would hold the balance of power in both houses of parliament.

Mr Bandt said a hung parliament would be likely, outlining a list of nine seats the Greens would target, including electorates in Melbourne, Brisbane and Byron Bay.

There must be a minimum of 33 days between when the election is called and when the poll is held.

The next election must be held by May 21 at the latest.
