Speculation grows into mystery of 'huge bang' across Merseyside

Residents across Merseyside are speculating as to what caused the "mysterious bang" that woke people up in the early hours of this morning.

After midnight, dozens of people in Kirkby and beyond said they heard what sounded like an "explosion" in the area take place, with some homes reportedly having experienced their "lights flicker" and "windows rattle."

Earlier today, Merseyside Police confirmed to the ECHO that they received a call around 1am this morning and said officers carried out an extensive search of the area - but nothing was found.

Many ECHO readers have since been speculating on social media and are trying to figure out what the mysterious noise was.

The "massive bang" was reportedly heard across Kirkby, Fazakerley, Huyton, Stockbridge Village, Knowsley Village and more.

Some residents believe the bang could have been fireworks, thunder and have even looked on lightening maps to try and figure out the cause of the noise.

One person said: "I’m in Huyton and didn’t hear a thing but I had music on, it will be thunder the weather yesterday was weird."

Another posted: "No lightning strikes in the last 12 hours in our area."

Another person said: "I heard it in St. Helens, and felt it too!"

Residents from Walton and Croxteth have also said they heard the mysterious bang, whereas others have stated they didn't hear a peep.

One person posted: "Nope! Never heard a thing, fast asleep."

Another said: "Really odd. I'm in Fazakerley and didn't hear a thing. Was up until 1.00 am. What time was the bang?"

Earlier this morning, Kirkby resident Lesley Parr told the ECHO her social media was full of people talking about the "total mystery", with many left scratching their heads as to what the sound was.

She said: "It was heard all over Kirkby, Fazakerley, Huyton, Stockbridge Village, Knowsley Village etc.

"I'm off Ribblers Lane, we saw flashing blue lights in the close next to us so my nosy boys took a walk over with the dog.

"The firemen said they've been sent in this direction and were just waiting for an update of a location, the police said the same thing too.

"Our house vibrated with how loud it was, others said their lights flickered and the windows rattled.

"It definitely sounded like an explosion though, I wonder if it was some freaky kind of thunder?"
