'Spectre Detectors' claim they've snapped a ghost in Edinburgh's Mary King's Close - do you see it?

Mary King's Close is an allegedly haunted series of underground vaults just off the Royal Mile in Edinburgh. It's said to be the stomping ground of various famous ghosts, including the spirit of a little girl. Tourists leave gifts of dolls for the ghostly child (although one famous toy was 'stolen' recently).

More recently, a team of paranormal investigators from Durham called the 'Spectre Detectors' visited the Close, and they've released images showing what they say is the figure of a ghost wearing a top hat.

The ghost hunters stayed in the Close overnight, and say they 'met a number of spirits' during the exploration. Almost 30 individual ghosts, in fact.

But it's one photo in particular - shared to their Facebook page - that has people in a bit of a spin.

The image claims to show a 'man in a top hat' hiding in one of the Close's rooms.

They shared it with the caption: "Photo taken at mary kings close by shayna. I see a man in a top hat and long coat"

Some commenters said that they could see the outline of a man in a top hat, although some were a bit more skeptical.

One man said: "I see a man but not in top hat."

And another joker added: "It looks like some dude with shades on smoking a joint".

The team travelled up from the North East to investigate the Close, and they have visited hundreds of haunted locations across the country - including in Edinburgh - since the group was founded in 2011.

Paul Nixon, general manager of The Real Mary King’s Close, commented: “With world renowned tales of ghost sightings dating back to 1685, this recent image has certainly sparked some debate in the office.”

He added:

“Although we welcome paranormal investigators from across the UK to explore the close after dark, we’re proud of our real history, and of telling the real stories of the people who once would have lived, worked, and died on the Close.”
