The unconventional decision to open the much-anticipated 24th Bond film Spectre on a Monday appears to be paying off in the UK with a record-breaking £6.3m on Tuesday.

The film now has the record for the biggest gross on a Tuesday and has also beaten Skyfall’s £6.2m on the Friday it opened in 2012.

Daniel Craig’s fourth outing as James Bond had already impressed on Monday when it opened at 8.15pm and scored £4.1m, despite most cinemas only being able to screen it a handful of times, given its 150-minute running time.

Distributor Sony is clearly hoping to match the success of Skyfall which still holds the position of the UK’s highest-grossing film of all time with a £102m total.

The film has achieved some five-star raves, including from the Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw, but it currently stands at 79% on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to Skyfall’s 93%.

It’s unclear as to whether it will become the UK’s biggest film of the year, a title currently held by Jurassic World with a gross of £63.7m. The much-anticipated Star Wars: The Force Awakens is still to be released and pre-ticket sales have already broken records in the UK.

Spectre is yet to be released around the world. It will open in the Netherlands this week and continue a global rollout soon after, with the US on 6 November.
