Spectacular waterspout pictured over Cardigan Bay

This was the spectacular sight captured over Cardigan Bay on Tuesday morning.

The waterspout, which is a column of cloud-filled wind rotating over a body of water, was spotted early in the morning from Talybont in Ceredigion.

The picture was taken by holidaymaker Laura Strong who said: "Waking up to a water spout in Tal-y-bont makes up for the lack of sunshine!"

There is a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms across large parts of Wales today. You can read more about the warning here.

The Met Office shared Laura's picture saying "WOW! A great shot of a #WaterSpout taken this morning by @loopylou1982 in Tal-y-bont #Wales."

According to the Royal Geographical Society that, despite its name, a waterspout is not filled with water from the sea.

They say: "A waterspout descends from a cumulus cloud. It does not "spout" from the water. The water inside a waterspout is formed by condensation in the cloud."

Weather for your area by postcode:

The Met Office forecast for Wales on Tuesday says: "A rather cloudy day with one or two showers at first, which will break out more widely from late morning. Some heavy and thundery downpours this afternoon. Feeling cooler than recent days. Maximum temperature 21 °C.

"Showers soon ease in the south leaving a largely dry night with clear spells here. Further north, some showers will persist overnight and light rain is likely in the west. Minimum temperature 11 °C."
