Stargazers are in for a treat tonight, as a stunning supermoon set to be the biggest and best of 2020 is set to fill the sky.
Tonight's Super Pink Moon will be the largest our satellite will appear all year, as its elliptical orbit brings it to its closest point to Earth today, a point known as its perigee.
A full moon occurs when the moon is located on the opposite side of the Earth as the Sun, meaning its face is fully illuminated.
But while tonight's spectacle is dubbed the Super Pink Moon, it sadly won’t actually appear pink in colour.
Instead the name was chosen by early Native American tribes because it marked the appearance of pink flowers.
Other names for this full moon are the Sprouting Grass Moon, Fish Moon, Hare Moon, Egg Moon and Paschal Moon.
When to see the Super Pink Moon
NASA explained: "There is a special lunar name for every full moon in a year. The April 8 full moon is known as the ‘Full Pink Moon’ because of the grass pink - or wild ground phlox - flower, which is one of the earliest widespread flowers to bloom in the spring.
"Full Moon names date back to Native Americans, of what is now the northern and eastern United States.
"Those tribes of a few hundred years ago kept track of the seasons by giving distinctive names to each recurring full moon.
"Their names were applied to the entire month in which each occurred."
While the Pink Moon will officially peak at 3.35am on Wednesday morning (April 8), it should be visible from nightfall tonight.
That means you should keep an eye out for it from around 8.15pm tonight in the UK.
