Rumoured Liverpool target Enzo Fernandez has been praised by global superstar Lionel Messi after helping Argentina clinch a vital 2-0 victory against Mexico on Saturday evening.
The two-times World Cup winners headed into the Group C fixture under huge pressure, after suffering a shock 2-1 defeat at the hands of unfancied Saudi Arabia last time out.
But a trademark finish from Messi gave La Albiceleste a second half lead, before substitute Fernandez sealed the win with a fine curling effort from just inside the penalty area, putting their World Cup aims back on track. All eyes are on Messi, who is widely believed to be participating in what will be his last World Cup, but the former Barcelona great had plenty of praise for teammate Fernandez, following his crucial contribution.

After the match Messi said: "I'm not surprised by Enzo. I know him and I see him train every day. He deserves it because he's a spectacular player."
Fernandez, 21, joined Benfica in the summer for an initial fee of €10 million plus €8 million in potential add-ons. His impressive early performances earned him Primeira Liga's Midfielder of the Month for August. He has five caps for Argentina and his memorable goal against Mexico on Saturday evening was his first in senior international football.
Reports have suggested that Fernandez has a release clause worth £105m in his contract at Benfica, should a club wish to sign the player just a few months after he moved to Portugal.
