Specials by Scott Westerfeld - review

Specials by Scott Westerfeld is an amazing book and a fantastic follow up to Pretties and Uglies, the other two books in the series. It is set in a futuristic world where the earth has been split into cities that want nothing to do with each other.

In Tally Youngblood's city, everyone is an Ugly until they turn sixteen, upon which they have an operation where they become a Pretty whose job is to party and have fun. When Tally was one of those partyers she discovered that in the operation, something is put into your brain to make you dumb and to stop you from having a care in the world. But Tally isn't one of them anymore. Now, she is a Special, designed with special reflexes and an icy mind, that was made to keep the pretties from realising what was happening to them.

Trouble appears when a doctor living in the wild discovers a cure to pretty head-ness and forms a new city of intelligent, non-brain damaged people who want to rebel against the city. When Tally wasn't a Special, she used to be on their side. Now she's been ordered to stop them and has the impossible choice facing her: Past or Present? Love or friendship? Hanging from a thin line between two different buildings, can Tally choose who's side she's on?

I love this book sooooooooooo much because of its amazing plot and the thrilling way in which it is written. The thread running through the book is of trust, orders and expectations. This strikingly action-packed book is not to be missed and definitely the best in the splendid series.
