Special teams play ‘just about a must’ in making Seahawks roster

The Seattle Seahawks have a competitive roster this summer, with a number of players vying to land a spot on the squad come the start of the regular season.

The ability to seize an opportunity, for instance in the wake of injuries, gives players on the bubble a fighting chance. But the ability to contribute on special teams could be the most important deciding factor.

“Well, good point really. All three, we would like that guy who doesn’t play as a regular starter, but is a starter 65 percent of the time to be available to play corner or coverage somewhere else,” coach Pete Carroll said Sunday. “Special teams is just about a must and you have to be part of that. So, that does figure in and that’s why it’s not easy to call right now.”

Versatility goes a long way in Seattle especially for players who are unable to secure a starting position. The Seahawks have three more preseason games for players to prove themselves worthy.

“I’m not worried about it at all, maybe you guys are but, I’m not worried about it at all, we’ve got plenty of time,” Carroll continued. “As long as guys are getting good, quality work we’re in good shape.”

The competition continues Monday when the Seahawks return to practice at 10:00 a.m. The roster cutdowns to 53 players take place on Saturday, Aug. 31.
