Special teams for probe, Delhi cops to use facial recognition

NEW DELHI: Delhi Police will identify the rioters involved in the Jahangirpuri incident using facial recognition technology and advanced social media tools, sources said on Saturday. Police commissioner Rakesh Asthana has also formed several special teams to ensure a crackdown, a top official said.

Two teams of Rapid Action Force have been deployed too. A flag march will be conducted at regular intervals by cops and paramilitary personnel. Drones are being used to check on miscreants and for security purposes.

A detailed report will be sent by Delhi Police to the Union home ministry by Sunday morning. A police officer said the ministry was keeping a close watch on the situation.

The police chief said in the evening that the situation was under control and senior officers had been deployed at the spot along with additional forces. “Adequate additional force has been deployed in Jahangirpuri and other sensitive areas. Senior officers have been asked to remain in the field and closely supervise the law and order situation,” Asthana said.

The commissioner also asked people to not believe rumours on social media and assured them that the rioters would be brought to task.

Police are scanning CCTV footage and mobile videos of the stonepelting and violence to zero in on the rioters. According to said sources, technical surveillance, dump data analytics, and advanced social media and engineering tools are being used to establish their identity. Police are also verifying if there was an intelligence failure and whether the special branch had issued any advisory or alert.
