Special task force plans to blitz crime in problem areas such as St Ann's and Radford

A special task force is set to be established to relentlessly blitz areas dominated by criminals and gangs.

Nottinghamshire Police are looking at establishing a permanent team that would be sent to areas including St Ann's, Radford, Sneinton and Clifton.

This comes after a major police operation in Bestwood saw more than 50 people jailed.

Operation Reacher was launched in April 2018 following an increase in firearm offences around the Bestwood estate.

Police used tactics such as early morning raids to disrupt and dismantle criminal gangs peddling drugs in the area, as well as living lavish lifestyles on the back of their criminality.

Detective Chief Superintendent Gerard Milano, head of crime for Nottinghamshire Police, now wants to establish a special task force off the back of it.

The task force of eight officers would target problem areas, "putting in doors" and seizing cash, drugs, weapons, vehicles and making sure offenders are behind bars.

A week-long trial has already taken place in Sutton-in-Ashfield to see if the Bestwood model can be used in other areas of the county.

Within a week, DCS Milano said the area "quietened down".

He said: "It has been successful in Bestwood and we are now looking at rolling it out in other areas. The same approach.

"I want it to happen. A permanent task force that will be assigned to areas of the city and county where it is most needed. That can include Sneinton, St Ann's, Radford and Clifton.

"It is not just about enforcement. It is about community. People in Bestwood talk to us, see us acting on what they say, and they trust us. It is visible and effective - the basic tools of policing."

In 11 months, officers working on Operation Reacher jailed more than 50 people and took £1.8m of heroin, cocaine, cannabis and MDMA off the streets.

They also seized six handguns, two shotguns, £300,000 in cash and 337 vehicles. The operation is still running in Bestwood.

He added: "Everyone who comes out of prison in Bestwood, they get a visit from Reacher.

"One man released after serving a drug dealing sentence said 'I am looking for a job - because Operation Reacher means I can't get involved in criminality any more.'

"Reacher stays in one patch - that's why it is so successful."

He said the problems facing areas like St Ann's and Radford are different to Bestwood and a tailored approach would be needed.

"There is a lot more to do in these areas," he added. "You have gangs fighting with gangs, young people carrying knives and disputes.

"In Clifton and Hucknall, it is anti-social behaviour, the night-time economy, and serious assaults."

Hyacinth Francis, founder of the Chayah Project in St Ann's, which works with young people in gangs, said: "It is a good idea. It is worth giving it a try.

"I don't like temporary measures but the ethos of it is good. But there needs to be a permanent approach. You can't just come in, sweep, and then go.

"Short term solutions will never work and the young people will know they will only be here for a while.

"We need something where they are going to be here long-term. We need to build respect."
