Special school near Bristol partially closed after confirming coronavirus cases

A special school near Bristol has partially closed after confirming two cases of coronavirus.

Warmley Park School and College in South Gloucestershire wrote to parents last week, informing them that two cases of COVID-19 have been identified among its community.

Two bubbles of pupils are now self-isolating and the college provision at the school has temporarily closed down.

A letter sent to parents on Friday (October 16) stated: "As you will be aware, in the last week we have had 2 confirmed cases of COVID at Warmley Park.

"From this we worked alongside the Public Health Outbreak Management Team, and South Gloucestershire Council to risk assess the situation which resulted in self-isolation for two groups of pupils and the closure of the college.

"A number of pupils and staff have also taken COVID tests which have come back as negative."

Children who are still attending school are having their temperatures checked twice a day, and the letter said this precaution has been approved by Public Health England.

The letter asked parents to let the school know if their children have had Calpol before coming into school, as this can "mask a fever" and might mean the potential symptom is not picked up during the checks.

It did not specify if the cases were among staff or children, or both.

Dozens of schools in the Bristol area have confirmed cases since the start of the academic year in September - the full list can be found here.

A parent of a pupil at Warmley Park told Bristol Live that the two cases are separate from each other and are not thought to be related.

He added that his child is not being allowed back to the college until Tuesday.

The school has been contacted for further details.
