Special order made over death of baby found on Wirral golf course

A special order has been made over the death of a baby boy on a golf course in Wirral.

The full-term baby was found by a couple walking their dog at 4.25pm on January 29 on Brackenwood golf course, Bebington.

At an inquest review hearing held today, Coroner Andre Rebello said he was opening an inquest because the case had been with the court for three and a half months.

He said officials were awaiting a post-mortem report, though they were not expecting to find the cause of death.

A DNA investigation is currently ongoing with the National Crime Agency's Missing Persons team.

Dr Rebello then explained that in these types of cases, the local authority will make the funeral arrangements and it is usual for these to involve cremations.

However, in this case Dr Rebello made a special burial order for the baby so that his body would be there if his family members came forward.

He also quoted from the police who made an appeal for information at the end of April - three months on from the baby being found.

Merseyside Police are still appealing for anyone with any information about the identity of the baby's mother or father to come forward.

On April 30, detective chief inspector Judith Blease said: "It is really sad that three months on we are still not in a position to reunite this baby boy with his family so that he can be finally laid to rest.

"We appreciate everyone who has come forward with information so far but we believe there are still people out there who can help us and I would urge them to come forward.

"We are not looking to attribute blame to anybody, we are simply trying to establish what has taken place and work with our partners in the health and social care sectors to offer support to the baby’s family.

"I am sure that there are people out there who know something but feel too scared or worried to come forward. I want them to feel reassured that the matter will be dealt with sensitively and all necessary help and support made available to those that need it."

At the inquest held at the Gerard Majella Courthouse in Kirkdale, Mr Rebello said he was not in a position to make a conclusion and hoped the parents would come forward.

The case was adjourned until August 18 at 2pm.
