Special moment pod of dolphins spotted jumping out of water in Merseyside

A pod of dolphins was captured on camera as they jumped out of the water on the Wirral coast.

Photos taken by Chris Williams show the amazing moment the bottlenose dolphins were spotted off East Hoyle Bank in Hoylake, Wirral on Thursday, June 18.

Sharing the photos on Twitter, one man said it was a "scarce sight" and "a real thrill to be able to watch these acrobatics."

He told the ECHO: "T hey are Bottlenose Dolphins which can occasionally be seen in Liverpool Bay but very rarely from the Wirral coast including my Hoylake home.

"Harbour Porpoises however are resident in the Mersey.

"Bottlenose Dolphins however are much larger, they breach a lot and have a falcate dorsal fin. They will have been offshore looking for food.”

Photos show three dolphins diving out of the water in different directions.

Over one hundred people liked the photos posted on twitter, with many commenting to express their surprise at the dolphins being seen in the area.

One Twitter user wrote: "How wonderful such beautiful creatures."

While another said: "What a lucky sighting!"

One man questioned whether it was the same pod of dolphins that passed Prestatyn in Wales early on Thursday morning.

While one woman said: "amazing!!!!"
