Special football match to be held on home of former Leeds United stars

Preparations are now underway for a one-off football match to be played at the ground once graced by former Leeds United stars.

David Batty, Noel Whelan and Paul Madeley grew up playing on the T.V Harrison Ground - dubbed the 'Wortley Wembley' - in west Leeds, but now 61 homes are planned to be built on the land.

The community in Wortley has since rallied together to put a stop to the proposals, part of over the coming years.

The football match will take place on September 14, but until then residents are being urged to help get the pitch ready to play on.

In a Facebook post, organiser Lea Westerman, said: "This only can happen though if we have your help.

"Obviously you can go whenever you want to the ground but if you would like to come when we are there then we plan to be there every Tuesday evening from 20th August from 6pm.

'Get involved'

"Then hopefully a full day on Saturday 7th September. So, if you would like to help please feel free to come along we also need petrol strimmers, mowers, rakes, wheelbarrows anything you have you could bring with you.

"Would be great to see you all. Get involved."

Over 1000 people have signed a petition to put a stop to plans for developers to build homes on the land.

In June, the city's Site Allocations Plan (SAP) and Leeds Local Plan were both approved - including the plans for T.V Harrison Ground - and the planning application is expected to be submitted in the Autumn.
