Special dolls depicting people who were in the spotlight this year were unveiled at a restaurant in the Ueno district in Tokyo on Wednesday.
Known as kawaribina, the six sets of dolls included some dubbed Reiwa Gannen bina (Reiwa first year doll), created in celebration of the start of the Reiwa era. There were also dolls titled One Team bina featuring the Japan national rugby team, which advanced for the first time to the top eight at the Rugby World Cup held in Japan this year.
"Fortunately, this year has seen a lot of positive news and all the dolls look good," said President Kenji Kanabayashi of Mataro Doll Ltd., the company that produced the dolls.
The dolls will be exhibited to the general public at Mataro's showroom in Taito Ward, Tokyo, from Jan. 4 to March 3.
