Spearfisherman swept off rocks in NSW

A large search operation is underway on NSW's mid north coast for a missing spearfisherman. (AAP)

A desperate search is underway for a spearfisherman swept off the rocks and into the ocean on the NSW mid north coast.

The 53-year-old was fishing with his son at Laggers Point near Trial Bay Gaol at South West Rocks on Thursday afternoon.

The pair were fishing in water when a large wave pushed them onto rocks about 1pm.

The father was then swept back into the water and has not been seen since, police say.

Officers from NSW Police, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, Marine Rescue, NSW Ambulance, NSW Surf Life Saving and local lifeguards are searching the man.

An inflatable rescue boat and rescue water craft have released a dye pack to track the water's drift pattern, Surf Life Saving say.

The man was wearing a wetsuit, one flipper, and a snorkel when he went missing.
