The Speaker of Kuwait's National Assembly, Marzouq Ali Al-Ghanim, stressed his country’s keenness to develop its relations with Baghdad in various fields, highly valuing the importance of Iraq’s victory on terrorism.

Ghanim headed a Kuwaiti parliamentary delegation that arrived in Baghdad on Thursday, on the eve of the 28th anniversary of the liberation of Kuwait from the Iraqi occupation. He held talks with President Barham Salih, Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi, Parliament Speaker Mohamed Halboussi, and other officials.

“One of the facts I desire to affirm that this visit has been made possible with blessing and guidance by His Highness the Emir, because of his concern for Iraq and his conviction that its stability is a necessity for the stability of the whole region,” he said during a news conference at the end of his visit.

During the meeting, the Iraqi president praised “the deep historical relations between Iraq and Kuwait,” stressing “the importance of enhancing joint cooperation for the benefit of both peoples.”

He also expressed his appreciation for “Kuwait's positions in support of Iraq in various fields, especially assistance in the return of the displaced,” according to the Iraqi News Agency.

The Iraqi Speaker’s Information Office said in a statement that Halboussi expressed hope that the visit would contribute to developing the relations in the different fields of cooperation.

“We highly appreciate Kuwait’s backing of Iraq in its war against terrorism and the elimination of ISIS, and its support for the political process,” the statement quoted the Iraqi speaker as saying.

Ghanim headed on Friday to Jordan, where he is visiting the Syrian and Palestinian refugee camps and attending the meeting of the Arab Parliamentary Union in Amman, entitled “Jerusalem, the eternal capital of the State of Palestine.”
