Spawning season for bigfin reef squid has begun off the coast of Kawana in Ito, Shizuoka Prefecture.
In early April, the Kawana branch of the Ito fisheries cooperative association, along with other organizations, set up a spawning bed made from bundles of chinkapin wood about 13 meters deep into the sea. A female bigfin reef squid, about 30 centimeters long, was seen laying eggs around it, accompanied by a larger male.
The way the white clusters of eggs sway in the current is said to be a popular sight among divers. The eggs are set to hatch in about a month, producing baby bigfin reef squid less than one centimeter in length.
