Spartans hailed for Gretna sportsmanship as Lowland League madness sees visitors gift walk-in goal after freak opener

There was drama in the Lowland League as Spartans gave Gretna 2008 a free goal after realising their opener was out of play.

Visiting Spartans took the lead on 26 minutes as ex Stirling and Edinburgh City hitman Blair Henderson slid home after the ball appeared to have hit the wheel at the side of the 3G goal before bouncing back into play.

The Gretna 2008 players paused while waiting for the whistle to blow for a goal kick and the home support expressed their disgust at Henderson's ill-gained opener.

But Spartans boss Dougie Samuel and his management team reviewed the footage and five minutes later allowed Gretna to equalise from an uncontested corner kick.

The home support congratulated Spartans' players and staff for their sporting integrity as they made their way down the tunnel at half-time.

Spartans' charity ended there though as Blair Henderson dispatched a penalty and headed home a free-kick to get his name on the score sheet for real. Jamie Dishington also turned home a cross as the Edinburgh side ran out triumphant 4-1 winners.
