Sparks fly before electrical substation explodes during torrential rain storm

This is the hair-raising moment an electrical substation exploded in Inverclyde.

Footage shows the the high-voltage facility, in Gourock, smoke and spark, go on fire then explode.

Over 24 hours of torrential rain and flooding in the area is believed to have caused the fault on Saturday afternoon.

A substation reduces electrical voltage so that it safer to deliver electricity to homes and business.

Yellow and black 'danger of death' signs are usually seen on entrance gates.

The frightening video clip sparked a huge reaction on social media, as worried locals commented and shared in their droves.

One said: "Scary stuff."

Another added: "Oh dear that is not good.

"Hope it gets sorted soon."

A third commented: "It's about to blow big time.

"They should evacuate the area."

The fenced-in station sits at the top of George Road in the town, where it meets a busy junction with Larkfield Road and Hilltop Road.

The appliance faces corner shop, A&D stores as well as numerous houses and a couple of blocks of flats.

Some claim the explosion caused a power cut in the surrounding area.

There are not believed to be any injuries.

It comes after much of Scotland was battered by heavy downpours over Friday and Saturday.

Widespread flooding saw cars submerged, power cuts and who roads closed down.

A two more weather warnings have been issued for all of Scotland.

The first, on Saturday into Sunday, is for wind while the second, on Monday, is for rain and then snow.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue service spokesman told the Record: "We received a call at 2.14pm today for George Road in Gourock to attend to an electrical substation involved in a fire.

"Two appliances attanded.

"Crews were able to leave the scene at 4.15pm.

"We have no reports of injuries."

A Police Scotland spokeswoman told the Record: "We attended the scene at 2.20pm."
