Spanish government on when Scots can return to holiday hotspots

The Spanish Government has revealed when and how tourists will be able to go on holiday again.

Spain was one of the European countries hit hardest by coronavirus - along with Italy, France and the UK - but the spread is starting to slow down.

The country is still under lockdown, but heavy industry and construction workers returned to work on Monday after a two-week hiatus, the Liverpool Echo reports.

And with summer fast approaching, holidaymakers might be wondering how the slowing rate of infection will affect trips booked before the outbreak.

Officials around the world are worried that stopping quarantine could easily undo hard-earned progress beating the virus, but there are signs countries are looking to the future.

The Spanish tourism minister says holidays in the country are still under discussion.

But Reyes Maroto didn't rule out restrictions such as "hand washing and social distancing on the beaches" staying in place once international tourism restarts.

Speaking to Spanish newspaper  El Pais, she said: "We have to guarantee, when international tourism opens, that the person who comes to Spain is a safe person.

"The issue of borders will be accompanied by the evolution of the health crisis.

"Therefore, I do not have the solution of when [they will be able to open]."

She added: "On how you will be able to enjoy our beaches, we are defining different scenarios.

"It is very important that the sanitary recommendations are maintained, we are going to have to internalise what we are already doing now, hand washing, social distancing ... even on the beaches.

"Those patterns will be in our day to day for a time, you cannot take a step back."
