Spanish airport to shut for a month with hundreds of flights impacted – here’s what to know

  • Santiago-Rosalia de Castro airport in northern Spain is scheduled to close for five weeks from 23 April to 27 May for runway resurfacing works.
  • During this period, the airport will be completely shut to all air traffic, impacting hundreds of flights, including those during the May half-term.

  • Separately, holidaymakers in Spain face disruption due to an indefinite strike by airport ground staff at 12 other major airports, including Barcelona and Madrid.
  • This industrial action, which began on 30 March, involves Groundforce and Menzies employees protesting an ongoing pay dispute, with partial work stoppages occurring on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
