Spain will open doors to UK holidaymakers without quarantine next week

UK visitors have been given the official go-ahead to enter Spain from Monday by the country's government after it lifted restrictions.

Ministers have confirmed that visitors from the UK will be allowed in without a threat of quarantine or the need to produce a negative PCR test result.

Spain is currently included in the amber category on the UK Government traffic light system meaning anyone visiting the country must self-isolate on return and take a number of Covid tests.

However, it has not stopped thousands travelling to resorts. More are now expected to fly to Spain next week, traditionally the UK’s favourite foreign holiday destination.

Flights are expected to increase by 200 per cent in the coming days, despite UK Government pleas not to travel for non-essential reasons.

However, the Spanish Interior Ministry has confirmed that the UK will be placed on Spain’s non-EU exemption list, in spite of initial fears over the spread of the Indian variant.

The ministry said: "At present the European Union is debating a modification of the recommendation on a temporary restriction of non-essential journeys from outside the EU. It’s foreseeable that Japan and the UK will be included in the list of country exempted.

"Several EU states have already put those two countries in that privileged position. Spain receives each year a number of visitors from the UK which is especially relevant in relative and absolute terms and many economic sectors need to adapt their capacity in anticipation of border changes.

"The modification will take effect from midnight on May 24."
