Spain weather warning as tourists warned of 'apocalyptic' heatwave and wildfires

Scottish tourists jetting off to Spain have been told be cautious amid soaring temperatures and wildfires in the country.

As reported by the Irish Mirror, an "apocalyptic" heatwave is spreading through European countries, with some seeing temperatures of up to 42 degrees Celsius.

Spain, France, Italy, and Germany all saw a massive spike in temperatures over the weekend, which have caused wildfires in certain regions.

Spanish firefighters were battling flames in the northern part of the country on Sunday, with a particularly aggressive fire in the Sierra de la Culebra mountain range ravaging more than 62,000 acres.

Emergency services tended the blaze overnight, with the cooler nighttime temperatures helping to extinguish the flames.

Around 20 villages in the area were allowed to return to their homes on Monday morning after being evacuated over the weekend.

Temperatures of over 40C were reported across the country last week, and while things are beginning to cool off, tourists should remain cautious.

Meanwhile, military units have been dispatched to the Navarra and Lleida areas in the north and north-east respectively.

Spain's national weather organisation AEMET has issued yellow weather warnings for Monday and Tuesday this week.

Meteorologists have predicted thunderstorms and a continuation of the scorching temperatures in the north east and eastern parts of Spain.
