Spain warns 'British tourists won't be welcome' as they crackdown on excessive drinking

Spain's tourism secretary has issued a warning to tourists as the country is expecting to see a surge of visitors over the summer.

British tourism plays a crucial part in Spain's summer economy, but officials have warned that the country will be cracking down on ‘tourism of excess’.

The Balearic Islands have already put a limit on the amount of drinks someone can have in an all-inclusive deal, happy hour and a curfew on buying alchohol.

And now mainland Spain is preparing to follow to suit and is preparing to outlaw bad behaviour, according to the Majorca Daily Bulletin.

Tourism secretary Fernando Valdés has warned British tourists will not be welcome if they continue to drink excessively and commit acts of behaviour.

As the i reported that Valdés said: “The tourism of excesses is not welcome in Spain. This is not a (holiday) format that we want to support, we want to change this model.

“It is not going to be easy. But this is something which we all agree on.”

This comes as Spain has already seen a record breaking increase in bookings of up 12 per cent in comparison on 2019.

Majorca’s Playa de Palma, one of the areas in the Balearic islands which has enforced the drink limit, has also said they will not serve customers who wear particular clothing, including football shirts, tank tops without straps and swimwear.

Spain and the islands have been trying to tackle anti-social behaviour, and are preparing for the wave of Brits that are set to visit over the summer.

Rules you need to know before going to Spain

Spain has warned they will issue fines of up to £645 for urinating in the sea.

At all Spanish beach showers, you can be fined up to £620 if you are caught using soap and shampoo to wash.

It is illegal and in regions like Valencia can see Brits slapped with a massive £1,240 fine.

If any Brits go nude on a non-nudist beach, they can expect a stern dressing down to go with a £620 fine.

In resorts in San Antonio, Magaluf and Playa de Palma, a drinking limit has been enforced. If you're on an all-inclusive holiday you have a six drink limit, sale of booze from vending machines are also banned and restrictions are in place on pub crawls.

The law also prohibits "off-licence" sales between 9:30pm and 8am in those areas and in Magaluf (Calvià) and Playa de Palma on the island of Mallorca, and San Antonio (San Antoni de Portmany) on the island of Ibiza.

If you are smoking on the beach, you can land yourself a £25 fine.
