Spain defeated Portugal 5-0 as the world champions made an impressive start to Euro 2025, in what was a highly emotional occasion for the Portuguese team following the death of men’s international and Liverpool forward Diogo Jota.

Jota was killed in a car crash with his brother Andre Silva in the early hours of Thursday morning, with the football world and beyond in mourning. Aitana Bonmati was only named among the substitutes but returned to the pitch late on after she was in hospital before the tournament with viral meningitis.

From the darkness, Portugal were faced with an impossible task: to bring some light into the world after the heartbreaking tragedy of losing one of their own. The death of Diogo Jota, killed in a car crash with his brother Andre Silva in the early hours of Thursday morning, had shaken the Portugal team when they woke up on the morning of their opening match of Euro 2025 against Spain. Afterwards, a 5-0 defeat to the world champions barely scratches the surface in the face of such a loss.

There was a lovely, sombre moment right at the end where the Portugal players went to the fans behind the goal and received a banner from them.

“Thank you for everything Diogo Jota”, it read. A lovely way for Portugal to end an emotional day, with today’s news very much hanging over this evening’s match.

FULL TIME! Spain 5-0 Portugal

Spain striker Esther Gonzalez scored twice in the first half as her side powered to a 5-0 win over Portugal that was overshadowed by the deaths of Portugal international Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva in a car accident earlier on Thursday.

On an emotional night that began with a minute’s silence for the brothers, the Portuguese team shipped the first of four first-half goals in the second minute, with Gonzalez scoring twice for the reigning world and Nations League champions, and Vicky Gonzalez and Alexia Putellas adding the other two.

Portugal showed more composure in the second half but they were no match for Spain's power, precision and technique and, though they held Spain at bay for most of the second half, Cristina Martin-Prieto scored with a superb late header to complete the rout.

The Portugal fans chant Jota’s name as the match began, with fans holding up letters spelling out "Rest in peace, Diogo Jota" in Portuguese.

HALF TIME! Spain 4-0 Portugal

20:49 , Jamie Braidwood

A difficult half on a dark day for Portugal, but Spain have been very professional. The world champions have raised the bar at Euro 2025 and there are very few teams, perhaps none, who are probably capable of matching it f they play like this in all six games. There’s been the usual dominance and control but also danger and so much threat.

GOAAAAL! Spain 4-0 Portugal

And four! A touch of fortune on this one as Claudia Pina’s clipped cross from the byline hits the post and then goes in off Esther Gonzalez, who gets her second of the game from a yard or two out.

Supreme from Spain. More frantic discussions unfold among the Portugal defence.

GOOOAL! Spain 3-0 Portugal

It’s three, and that’s the pick of the bench so far from Alexia Putellas! Injured on the eve of the Euros three years ago, the two-time Ballon d’Or winner makes her mark on Euro 2025.

After making her way into the box, she sits down a Portugal defender by cutting onto her left foot and firing a left-footed finish past the goalkeeper. Another sign that Alexia is back at her best after a couple of difficult of years with injuries.

8 mins: Oh dear. It’s sheer delight for Spain, another wonderful goal crafted and finished off this time by Vicky Lopez, the 18-year-old who is in the team in place of Aitana Bonmati.

Portugal’s players meet just outside their box for a huddle and to reorganise. They took some hammerings in the recent Nations, losing 7-0 to England, and it looks like Spain are hungry for goals tonight.

But also, what a wonderful goal from Esther Gonzalez, who is may people’s pick for top scorer at the tournament.

‘They stole it from us’: How Spain can reclaim their moment

19:16 , Miguel Delaney

When the England team left the pitch after their last match against Spain, a 2-1 comeback defeat in June’s Nations League fixture, there was one overriding feeling in the dressing room. “They’re just so hard to play against”, was one exhausted view.

Spain’s ideology means they’re seen as an almost singular challenge in the women’s game. The England players enjoy the test, admire the players as icons, and know the world champions are the team to beat.

Spanish manager Montse Tome has still rejected the description of favourites, in that way that coaches do to try and get elite teams playing as if they are starting from scratch again. Many of Spain’s world champions would actually like to start from scratch in a different sense. This singular team want their own singular victory, independent of past troubles.

Lionesses 'shocked' by Diogo Jota's death

19:03 , Jamie Braidwood

England defender Lucy Bronze said the Lionesses would lend their full support to the Portuguese team at Euro 2025 after they were “shocked” by the death of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota.

“Yeah it definitely shocked all the squad when we woke up this morning and the news started to spread,” said Bronze, who is half-Portuguese.

“Obviously we have a lot of Liverpool fans in our team and football fans, but for people in general, everyone is just thinking of them – him and his brother. They were so young as well.

“We have seen all the messages on social media and stuff so you can tell what a great guy he has been. It’s just really sad and we were shocked by the news, really.”

FULL TIME! Belgium 0-1 Italy

Arianna Caruso’s first half goal is enough to get Italy off to a winning start at Euro 2025. They beat Belgium 1-0 and looked to be in complete control, with some stylish flashes. Could they compete with Spain for top spot in Group B?

They will have to wait until the third round to play the world champions and are up against Portugal next. But that’s a fine start, especially since Italy did not win any of there three group games at Euro 2022.

“On behalf of the Portuguese Football Federation and myself, I would like to offer our deepest condolences to the families and friends of Diogo and Andre, as well as Liverpool FC and FC Penafiel, the respective clubs of the players.
