Spain tourists issued wildfire warning as scorching temperatures hit 43 degrees

Spain's fire and rescue service are battling wildfires across the country as temperatures exceed 40 degrees.

After days of scorching heat, dozens for wildfires in eight of the 17 regions broke out. Officials in Catalonia said the fire service was battling 30 blazes on Saturday alone.

It comes after holidaymakers were given a weather warning of intense heat with officials urging Brits to take extra care.

The Foreign Travel Advice say: "Forest fires occur frequently in Spain, including Spanish islands, during the summer months, when temperatures regularly reach over 40C.

"Take care when visiting or driving through woodland areas.

"Check on the outbreak of fires with the local civil protection authority and report any you see immediately to the emergency services on 112."

One of the worst fires broke out near Baldomar, in the north eastern province of Lleida in Catalonia, according to EuroNews.

The Catalan government said 500 hectares of trees had already been destroyed and officials warned it had 'the potential' to rip through another 20,000.

In the north west of Spain in the Sierra de la Culebra mountain range, a blaze destroyed 25,000 hectares and forced the evacuation of hundreds of residents around the area.

Meanwhile, around 15 municipalities were evacuated from the Navarre region in the North of Spain, the Guardian reports.

The scorching weather comes as Spain's meteorological agency blames climate change for more frequent heatwaves.

An Aemet spokesperson Rubén del Campo said: “By the mid-21st century, which is not too far away, a normal summer could be as hot as the hottest summer we have experienced so far or even hotter. So what is extraordinary now will end up being normal.”
