Spain to stay on UK quarantine list as coronavirus cases hit new high

Spain reported its highest single daily increase in the number of new coronavirus cases yesterday.

The popular holiday destination reported 3,715 new infections in the past 24 hours, the health ministry confirmed on Wednesday.

The shocking statistics mark a new daily record since the country exited lockdown in June.

EU data shows Spain has the highest number of cases in western Europe, with an average of 138.7 per 100,000 over the past 14 days.

By comparison, the UK currently stands at 20.9, while Italy has 10.7 and France has 46.3.

Of the 3,715 cases, around half were in Madrid (1,535), with the Basque Country Basque Country (472) and Aragon (466) also hit hard.

Data released on Wednesday shows a total of 34,645 cases have been recorded.

The number of people across Spain being hospitalised with coronavirus is also climbing, with the figure jumping by 240 on Tuesday to 1,336.

A total of 346 people were admitted to hospital in Madrid, followed by 251 in Aragon and 168 in Andalusia.

Officials in Spain have announced strict new measures to reduce the number of cases.

All nightclubs and discos have shut, while restaurants and bars must close at 1am, with no new customers after midnight.

Health Minister Salvador Illa has banned people from smoking in the street or public spaces if social distancing is not possible.

The politician also advised against gatherings of more than 10 people and ordered young people not to gather in the street to drink alcohol.

All holidaymakers visiting Spain or the Canary and Balearic Islands must self-isolate for 14 days.

The Foreign Office continues to advise against non-essential travel to those destinations.
