Spain to lift restrictions on travel from Scotland at the end of this month

Spain will reopen its borders to Scots tourists from the end of this month.

The Spanish Government imposed a complete ban on people travelling in from the UK in December after details of the more-transmissible ‘Kent variant’ of coronavirus emerged.

However, officials have been reportedly buoyed by vaccine rollouts in all parts of the UK.

Nicola Sturgeon revealed earlier that Scotland is ‘on track’ to give a first dose of the Covid jab to more than half the country’s population by the end of today.

It has been confirmed that Scots will once again be allowed to enter Spain from March 30 - paving the way for holidays in the European country once international travel restrictions are lifted in Scotland.

Spanish government spokesperson Maria Jesus Montero confirmed the decision at a press conference yesterday, reports El País.

Passengers arriving in the country will have to show a negative coronavirus test, which should be taken 72 hours before arrival.

The Scottish Government has stayed cautious about the reopening of international travel amid fears over new variants of the virus.

It is hoped that foreign holidays could resume from May 17, but it could be ‘some time after’ according to the Government’s roadmap out of lockdown.

Nicola Sturgeon previously warned that overseas travel is unlikely to be possible before June.

Current lockdown rules mean that it is illegal to fly out of Scotland, unless it is for an essential reason.

Speaking at a Scottish Government coronavirus press briefing last week, the First Minister said: “All of us want to have every aspect of life back to normal, for the benefits of individual freedoms as well as the importance of international travel to our economy.

"But we know two things right now. While we see lots of signs here, domestically in Scotland and across the UK, the picture is not as rosy in many other parts of Europe including some parts of Europe, where we are starting to some increase in the virus.

"We have to be cautious. This is a global pandemic, and we have to be cautious about the global pandemic as we consider our connectedness.”
