Spain to defy EU quarantine demand for UK holidaymakers after green list move

Spanish government officials say they will not back a demand for UK visitors to quarantine for two weeks when travelling to EU countries.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron have pressed other EU leaders to impose stringent quarantine requirements of arrivals to the bloc from Britain.

However, the country has vowed to let UK holidaymakers continue to enter the country without restrictions following the announcement that the Balearic islands was among nations being added to the green list of destinations, although mainland Spain remains off-limits.

Foreign affairs minister, Arancha González Laya, said: "We are currently maintaining the measures that allow British citizens to enter our territory.

"The Government will continue to monitor the situation, as we do with every country in the European Union and third countries as the pandemic evolves."

Balearics tourism minister Iago Negueruela praised the "incredible effort of its citizens" and said "workers are on the verge of being able to go back to their jobs".

He told a press briefing: "Now we can clearly say that we are the most open Mediterranean destination."

He added it was vital the Balearic Islands remain on the UK green list "permanently", and said the move represents an opportunity for the "real recovery" of the economy and the need to extend the holiday season for UK visitors.

The minister said he hoped the profile of visitors "begins to turn towards a more family-friendly tourism" and pledged to take action if there to stamp out any behaviour that may threaten the green list status.

He said: "If there begins to be tourism that generates excesses and puts the health of tourists and citizens at risk, the Government will be just as forceful as last year. "We cannot afford steps back."
